Shifting from the lush beauty of New Zealand to an ex-penal colony largely covered by desert could be seen as a strange move. Miraculously for me in the mid nineties It was a life changing move, resulting in a beautiful wife, a delightful family and numerous highlights. However that move pales in comparison to the 500metre shift from Brunswick Secondary College to Princess Hill High School. Both moves were a journey away from the familiar, away from loved ones, into something scary, something new but also something shiney, full of hope and wonder.
What could be more exciting than a referee with a body camera?
I’ll tell you what.
Nothing.
There is nothing more exciting than a uniformed Frenchman in matching knee length socks and gloves wearing a freaking body camera. It’s like the future, where the world is perfect, polished the best thing it could imagine and transported it back to us now to give us all hope that everything is going to be ok.
The nets have no holes.
There are Signatures on iPads.
There is a ladder.
The opposition on the schedule matches the opposition on the court.
There’s a new clubhouse, the burgers are quite good, if somewhat messy.
And the game lived up to the hype.
Keen young men with floppy hair dressed in black put something of a dampener on the evening by winning, the fairytale it was not.
We started with flair and aplomb, first goal from a sweetly taken corner caught the captains foot and the back of the net. Then a lobbed cross met the captains limp volley and again the back of the net, two goals up within the first 5 minutes. The first half was nanna style, cross court passing, strong defensive particularly from Chassey and Takeshi, forward thrusts from Cocky. The second half was harder, Jim was big up front and Gilla was enormous down the back but it was Tao with two goals, including a long range thunderbolt that shone. The loping Gen-y‘s had the finalise say however, shooting truly from long range.
Change comes at a price, great change costs $20.00 for a chicken burger ( only on thirsdays ).
