From the Latin bracchia meaning “a pair of arms” comes the old French brace, which means an armful or a pair of arms. Over time, the meaning shifted to describe a pair of things held together. By extension, hunters used “a brace” to mean two identical animals killed on a hunt (such as a brace of rabbits or pheasants).Then in the late 19th century, English football fans and reporters adopted the term “a brace of goals” to describe a player scoring two goals in a single match, mirroring the hunting terminology.
And so it was on this fair eve that a great many braces were enacted. Goalkeep Gilby had a brace of assists. Captain Hinkley also with a brace of assists, and for good measure he also bagged a brace of goals. And the Author who indeed scored a brace of braces (side note on 2s and operators see below). A most productive outing for the brave and noble Nannas.
To the particulars. The captain and the author were as two peas in a pod, passing the ball from one to the other and back again, and so on and so forth until one or the other wouldst tap into an open net. The captain was also on hand, stooping to guide a glancing headed ball, ably launched from behind our defensive wall by keeper Gill. Another such ball was plucked from the air by the outstretched foot of the leaping author whose intention was but to ‘get it back in the mix’ when fortune chose instead to ripple the catchments of the opposition goal. Some other business was affected by the remaining number, Taoser, Takeshi and Andy “Chipmunk” Walmartin* all taking the fight to the enemy. Huzzah.
